This provoked me think how God had given Adam and Eve everything, absolute access to everything except one tree. One tree that became Eve’s entire focus. She was convinced, with the aiding of the enemy, that ONE THING would make her content, would complete her, would make her “happy”, better, somehow more than she already was. So, she pursued it to the fullest…and it was the very demise of not only her, but everyone. Proving our sin NEVER only affects just us.
I have had a lot of “one things” in the course of my life. Many proved to be my downfall and in all honesty–idols. As ugly as it sounds, things I pursued far more than God. Nothing…nothing this world offers satisfies. It’s not how we were designed, to find contentment in anything the world offers. No home, job, person, car, drug, food, pleasure, vacation, fill in the blank _______ will ever satisfy. Think about how many times we have attained one of these goals thinking it to be the cure for our happiness. If we are honest, it doesn’t take long for us to be in pursuit of the next thing. Scheme of the enemy…he knows all the while we are preoccupied with these temporary trappings, we are not preoccupied with Jesus. And Jesus provides ALLLLLLLLLL we desire: security, unconditional love, faithfulness, grace, guidance, protection, provision, life abundantly.
Let’s call the enemy on his lies, let’s don’t mindlessly keep doing what we have always done. Let’s be “new”! New creations with new choices and new focus and new life, life abundantly!!
