lessons from Walter

This is Walter.  We lovingly named him (and every bird that looks like him) when we visited Panama City Beach, Florida.  I watched him for quite a while and was simply fascinated.

He waits up by the water, I assume he is looking for something good to eat.  When the tide comes in, he runs as fast as his legs can carry him to get away from it.  He never lets the water touch his feet. How does he do that? Is he listening? It’s a mystery.

When the tide rolls back out, he assumes his position near the shoreline.  He must walk a million miles in a day to flee the danger of being swept up in the water.  He is aware that he physically would be overcome in the rolling waves and he seeks safety; solid ground with no threat.

As I observed his habits, I thought, I want to be as aware as Walter.  I want to push my limits and step outside my comfort zone, away from my safe place-but also, I want to recognize any threat that could hinder my very existence and purpose.  I want to be bold enough to step away from comfort and the illusion of security, possessing not one ounce of fear but rather wisdom of knowing when to flee and when to seek shelter.

Proverbs 27:12 The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty.
