Some days are monumentally hard. Some days drudge up yesterday’s trials that haven’t found their way to resolve. Other days present a new orchestration to trigger us into remembering the depth of a wound, bringing horrendous pain right back to the forefront of our hearts and minds. And still others take our breath and push us to the extremes of survival mode, just trying to navigate the next minute and keep our head above water.
Even though we are often left dismayed by any given unexpected injection of pain or panic in our lives, there is someone who is not. Even though we may not see a smidge of hope, the truth is we have it available whether we can see it or not. Even though we have absolutely no idea how we will navigate, how we will overcome, how we will survive—we can choose to trust there is One who is working all things for our good; no matter what it looks like, no matter our feelings, no matter our limited human ability.
The Bible tells us, in 2 Corinthians 4:8, we are afflicted in EVERY way-but NOT crushed; perplexed (baffled) but NOT despairing. In verse 9 it continues… persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. What powerful truths to be mindful of throughout our days, especially those that bring immeasurable challenge.
Yesterday was one of those days for our family. And even though we cling to the promises of Jesus and to Him as our anchor, circumstances can still deplete our physical bodies in ways that are exhausting and leave us dazed and wondering what’s next.
When I looked out the window this morning, I saw tons of thick, overlapping clouds doing their best to cover the sun and any light it may bring forth. But—the sun insisted on fulfilling its purpose no matter the cloud activity. This magnificent ball of fire pressed through every crack and crevice of space in the cloud density.
What a lesson for us. We can choose to rest in our purpose and know our reveling in that purpose is not dependent on any efforts to squelch us, detour us, distract us, harm us or baffle us. We have the privilege of parking in something bigger than our limited perspective and our insufficient comprehension of all encompassing eternal plans.
I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:14
Such truth! There’s a war raging in the spiritual realm and it’s so easy to forget who we ARE in Christ and that there’s power in the Holy Spirit.
